Meeting a designer can be a daunting experience. I am here to tell you that it shouldn’t be! We are all friendly people like yourselves, really.
You might be worried that you don’t know exactly what you’re looking for. Well, let me tell you this, most people don’t. Even those that do quite often end up loving something that they didn’t think they would initially. As designers, it is our goal to produce something you love and feel truly represents your brand.
It is not essential that you have a wonderful concept before you contact a designer. In fact, it’s not essential that you have anything at all. It does make our jobs that little bit easier having a base to work off, however, that is what we as designers are here to do: we find answers to questions that may not be answered yet.
PRESENTING A CONCEPT TO YOUR DESIGNER
So, let’s say you have no idea about your brand. You want to present some sort of concept to your designer. In no way do we expect you to mock up a hundred and one designs to portray what you’re imagining (don’t let that stop you though). It’s the designer’s job to do research, we’ll help you get the best look and feel for your brand. We will do some digging to pull out your prominent theme, colours and fonts that will really suit the feel. So, if you come to us with nothing, don’t panic because that’s what we’re here for!
And what if you do have a concept? We are more than open to ideas, images and colour palettes! Don’t let anything stop you if you feel it will help explain your ideas. It could be some sound, maybe a texture you’ve found or a really blurry photograph you took three years ago. We can work with anything!
WE’RE HERE TO HELP
I hope what you have taken from this is that as a designer, we don’t expect anything. Anything you do want to present to us can be as wild as you like! We are here to take control of those ideas. We are here to create ideas you didn’t realise you even had.
There are no expectations, so don’t be scared to get the ball rolling.

Thanks, great article.
Thank you, really glad you found our post useful!
Such a good read! I always find it difficult to express my ideas to designers for logos and stuff.
You’re not alone there. Clients need to know that we don’t ‘expect’ anything. Its about open discussion, bouncing around ideas and funnelling that down to create effective designs, that work! I’m glad you enjoyed the post!
This is great as most of the time the customer doesn’t know exactly what they want and it makes the designers job harder.
You’re right in that sometimes a customer doesn’t know what they want, BUT that isn’t necessarily a bad thing. It is our job to figure out what our clients do want and what best serves their target market/ audience.
What a great read about being tru to yourself
Thanks for reading Cassie!
When i self published my book…. The designer had a hard time figuring out what i wanted mainly because im new to it so jargons are new to me and the process that goes with publishing but they are professionals and understood my shortcomings.
You are not alone there. Never feel like your getting in to deep because you don’t understand the process. Thats why you are employing people like myself. We will guide you through it and I am glad your designer did exactly that!
Not exactly expressed concept to high profile designer. But I do contact low cost designers and discuss my idea.
I think the cost is irrelevant, the important thing to take away from this is that there is not one right way to present a concept to your designer. We are there to help!
I love this. It is short and informative. I wish I saw this earlier
I’m glad this has been useful for you!
